Suspicious Auspicious

about

Recorded live and raw in Montreal, Suspicious Auspicious pays respect to the purity of old recordings while remaining fresh and innovative. Originally written in a jam setting, the two-chord vamp is simple in essence but inventive in its rhythms and variations.

The uptempo 16th-note swing features all three musicians in different parts of the song. Starting with the piano theme, the bass solo that follows builds to the drum-focused energetic finale. The song finishes with ethereal rhodes riffs over dark and glitchy grooves.

In keeping with the improvisational inspiration, the band deliberately avoided choosing a set arrangement for the piece prior to heading into the studio. Bassist Orion Miller took this so much to heart that when he arrived for the session, he had forgotten his original bassline altogether. “It was pretty funny when we started soundchecking and I realized I didn’t remember the song,” said Orion. “But that was the goal: to capture the raw intensity of a fresh progression. After a quick listen to a rough recording of the jam on my phone, we were ready to hit record.”

Playing the only chording instruments in the piece, keyboardist Marina Durham had a lot to do with creating its ambiance. A dirty synth pad acts as a drone throughout, while electric piano forms the melodies. “We were very uninhibited with Suspicious,” Marina reminisced. “It was freeing to forget about arranging and just play and have fun, and I think that spirit really shines through in the recording.”

“The jam flowed easily,” drummer Varoujan Mardirossian said. “The tempo is upbeat and the energy is relentless. The improvised nature of the tune worked in our favor by making space for us to showcase our individual musicianship.”

The official video is a humorous take on tour-life cabin fever. Filmed entirely in an old travel trailer, it depicts the band living together in tight quarters for an extended time. They play cards, read, jam, drink copious amounts of coffee, and go slightly crazy in the close confines.
